Why Your Dieting Resolution Won’t Work

March 25th, 2009 Filed under: Personal Hygiene by personalhygienefreak

Can you diet your way to fitness? Last year, a study titled, “Weight Loss With a Low-Carbohydrate, Mediterranean, or Low-Fat Diet,” published in the New England Journal of Medicine reported on the two-year effectiveness of these three types of diet for overweight people. The best results came from low-carbohydrate diets, and there were no signs of the health risks that some people claim for these kinds of diets.

So that’s cool. Just go on a low-carb diet for a while and you’ll soon have the body you want, right? Not exactly. We need to look into this a bit more to see why a great diet plan isn’t enough to get the body you want.

A big problem with basing your fitness plans on dieting is that diets don’t take into account this muscle loss. Effective diets may take fat off your frame, but they don’t do anything to preserve your muscle mass, much less help you build additional muscle. It is an established scientific fact that starting around our 30th birthday, we naturally begin losing muscle mass. If we don’t do anything to counteract this, a person will typically lose 5 to 10 pounds of muscle per decade. That’s a lot of muscle, and something that diet plans do nothing to prevent.

Now this latest study didn’t specifically look at muscle mass (a search of the original report didn’t even turn up a mention of muscle) so it’s possible that one type of diet could have more of an effect on muscle mass than another. But going by the results of this study, there’s no reason to believe that any type of diet will do anything special to prevent the gradual muscle loss that comes with age. It’s going to be hard to build an awesome body when your youthful, sexy muscles are slowing fading away.

Second, the results of the diets are weak. The participants were overweight men and women, or people with Type 2 diabetes. They were split up into three groups, one for each of the three types of diet. Each person also received instructions and information related specifically to the type of diet they were on. During the two-year study, each group of people had eighteen 90-minute meetings with a dietician to help them stay on track. People who were having particular trouble received motivational phone calls as well.

The results of all this? Among the people who stayed in the program for two years, the average weight loss for the low-fat diet was 3.3 kg (7.27 lb), for the Mediterranean diet was 4.6 kg (10.14 lb), and for the low-carb diet was 5.5 kg (12.13 lb). In addition, participants saw some improvement in cholesterol levels and other health markers.

This sounds good at first, but think about it. The best performing group, with help from a nutritionist, resulted in a loss of just over 12 pounds in 24 months. One type of diet may be better than another, and for overweight and diabetic people to lose some weight is surely good. But is losing 12 pounds over 2 years, with a dietician’s help and without any consideration for preserving your muscles, really going to get you the body you want?

A healthy diet is surely a good first step, and crucial to achieving the fitness you want. But as this study shows, dieting alone won’t get you there. The key to a super body and personal fitness is A complete fitness plan.

Some Supplements Can Help You When Taken Properly

February 9th, 2009 Filed under: Personal Hygiene by personalhygienefreak

Health And Weight Loss

All around the country indivduals use supplements to give them an edge in lots of areas of life. Some indivduals use them to make their working out give them more results. Other people use supplements to keep them healthy going into old age. It doesn’t matter why you use supplements, I’m willing to bet they can help you in some way.

My buddy once thought that taking supplements was cheating. After a lot of discussion I finally covinced him to give them a shot. He got so big by pumping supplements into himself and working out almsot non-stop that I had to convince hime to take a break and relax before it got redicoulous. Even with that in mind there is a definate maxium to how much they can help, so read the label and if you want to take more than one at a time talk to a doctor.

One big problem people have is that they can’t always pay for supplements. I can usderstand why as if you want to buy nutrition supplements, it can get pretty expensive. The best place to buy them is probally online as you can find some pretty great deals, especially on ebay and other sites like that. If you can only afford to get one type of sports supplement I would suggest you buy folic adic supplements. They can be a big boost for practically any use that you want.

One thing people should keep in mind is that you don’t need to go crazy with supplements. In my opinion, if you don’t want to take them, you don’t even need supplements to get a good workout. It all really just depends on your wants and needs. If you need a top notch workout supplements can help. The bulk of people in North America could get what they need by getting off the couch. What you need to find out is what works best for you. Keep fit, have fun, and always remember, if you are going to start a supplement regement consult an expert.

The problem with most diets

November 4th, 2008 Filed under: Personal Hygiene by personalhygienefreak

When such a high percentage of the people are overweight it seems fitting that there is significant number of the population who are extremely image conscious. Perhaps this is in part to those health magazine covers with men and women who have desirable, health and fit looking bodies. This of course has had a knock on effect with more fitness clubs and health spas being built.

Even though the average weight of the population in the Western world continues to rise, this seems to have fueled the interest in health and fitness products. But exercise is not the only way to build that body beautiful because it also entails a certain responsibility about the foods we choose to eat as being healthy and fit requires one to follow a regular diet fitness regime.

Our diet and our fitness are two halves of the same coin and need to be worked together as it is the food we consume that will determine how quickly we can repair cells and tired parts of our body. What doesn’t help the average person is what diet-fitness regime to follow as both seem to make sense; there is the one that says eat foods with high carbohydrate levels and the other which says you need to eat foods with a high fat content which appears to contradict everything we are told about dieting.

The first thing you need to know would be the fundamental differences between these two diet approaches because as the name implies, high-carb diets concentrates on taking in carbohydrate-rich foods while high fat diets endorses fat-rich foods. The high-carb enthusiasts say that we need these sorts of foods because the glucose (or energy) is stored in the muscles and liver in the form of glycogen which is great for short burst of energy or any type of anaerobic exercise.

The other camp believe that because fat is a higher source of calories an it metabolizes in a fraction of the time it takes carbohydrates, then these are the foodstuffs we should consume before exercise. So according to the experts, it doesn’t matter which you choose, as long as you don’t follow both at the same time, unless weight gain is what you want.

The purpose of diet fitness is to change your diet and lose excess body weight in the form of fat, by regular physical activity. To achieve this, research has shown that you need to think about how you are currently living your life which includes the type of food you like to eat and if there are any medical considerations.

What isn’t given enough emphasis though is the responsibility we all have to eat healthy as part of this regime and not just to expect exercise and fitness to be a cure-all. Although it still means that that essential nutrients and proteins for example that keep the body and mind healthy should be part of that diet; amounts of which are broadly publicized by health organizations.

Those followers of eating foods with high carbohydrate content believe these are best owing to the amount of energy that can be stored in the muscles ready for instant release.
